LIVERPOOL THROUGH THE YEARS

This project was created in collaboration with a group of students at Greenwood High School in Millerstown, PA. Millerstown and Liverpool are neighboring towns and reside within the same school district. The painting tells a brief history of the town of Liverpool and the elements that have made it unique as a transportation hub on the Susquehanna river over the past 200 years. The still-life in the center uses historical photographs and objects that tell a more complete visual history of the town.

This project was sponsored and funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Perry County Council of the Arts and Greenwood High School.

A look at the process

This image is the design printed at approximately 1/12 scale.

Once the design is printed and hung on my studio wall I begin numbering all the colors that I will then have to mix to create the palette for the paint-by-numbers.

This was the wall prior to the necessary preparation. It’s the side of a small post office in Liverpool, Pennsylvania.

The wall was power-washed and a new, billboard-like surface was adhered to the wall.

The craftmanship that was involved in fabricating and installing this surface did not go unappreciated.
